I am Stephen Moore and I was a family doctor in Raleigh, NC for most of my working life. I am a native North Carolinian and a graduate of Chapel Hill. I started painting in 1980 under the informal tutelage of Eleanor Seng, who had been my art teacher at a community art class when I was in the fifth and sixth grade in Burlington, NC. That friendship in art lasted twenty-five years until she passed. Notably, Eleanor was taught by Emile Holzhauer who was a student of Robert Henri. My mentorship  painting with Eleanor was from life with the Henriesque emphasis on putting life and color into the artwork. And that plein air education instilled the foundation of how I paint today. I am known for my colors and light. I paint mainly landscapes, coastal and mountains. But figures and wildlife are also frequent subjects, especially as they relate to the landscape. I started showing in the eighties and have had many exhibitions over the years. I have traveled extensively in my painting adventures with painting trips to France, England, Italy, Russia, and Mexico. But my focus tends to be on North Carolina now. I paint in my studio from my photos. I am a representational painter. I think my work as being a hybrid of Expressionist, Fauvist, and Impressionist styles. I like making seldom-seen spots visible and painting familiar scenes in a fresh and inspiring way. Because most of my work has been sold through galleries, I don't know all the collections that I am part of. But I have work in corporate collections such as Rex Hospital in Raleigh, Duke Hospital in Durham, Family Medical Associates in Raleigh, Second Empire Restaurant in Raleigh, Hospice of Raleigh, SAS in Raleigh, Jordan and Price Law firm in Raleigh, the Dunes Club in Atlantic Beach, Crystal Coast Oceanfront Hotel in Pine Knoll Shores, and many others. Most of my work is sold into private collections. I retired from medicine in 2015 to paint full time. And my painting journey continues.
